Titan's curse

Author's note: I wrote this piece to demonstrate my understanding of theme.


What would it be Like if you were a Demigod? What would you do? In The Titan’s Curse by Rick Roadian , Percy and his friends have to survive to protect the ones they love. Survival is a major theme in this story, as well as other stories, for several reasons.

One reason is that Percy and his friend have to fight a giant lion in order to survive.
The lion attacked Percy but Percy fought back. Thaila, Percy’s cousin, a demigod too, was hit by the lion into a pole; however, she survived with a minor headache.

Another reason is that they have to fight skeletal warriors. The skeletal warriors keep coming back whenever Percy stabs them. They run away but the skellys keep finding them. Eventually, they hitch a ride on two metal angels and get away from the skeletons to survive.

Another story that has survival as a central theme is Warriors by Erin Hunter. The warriors are cats that hunt for their food and battle other clans for territory. An example of fighting for territory is Lionclan verses Bloodclan. Lionclan won and got their territory back to survive.  

The Lightning Thief by Rick Roadian  is another novel that focuses on survival of the characters.
A reason why survival is a main theme in the Lightning Thief is the kindly ones attack Percy on a bus. Percy and his friends escape just when the bus blows up. They lose all their supplies and have to fend for themselves.

In The Titan’s Curse, The Lightning Thief, and Warriors a major theme is survival. They have to fight a giant lion to survive in The Titan’s Curse. Also they must return a stolen lightning bolt to Zeus in The Lighting Thief.  Lastly in Warriors, the cats need territory and the animals inside to thrive. In the end, all of these books require fighting as a means of survival.

Ellie and Sieg

Author's note: I wrote this piece to demonstrate my understanding of predicting

What would it be like for you if you had no past? Meet Ellie. Ellie is a main character in Rave Master by Hiro Mashima. Ellie can’t remember anything from her past.  She is one of three main characters who are searching for the Rave stones. The Rave stones give anyone who bears them immense power. I predict that Ellie will die in the end of the story.

The reason that I think Ellie will die is that she bears a power called Aetherion. If Aetherion activates it will tear Ellie's body apart and destroy the world. However, there is a man named Sieg Hart that wants to kill her to make sure that it doesn’t happen.

Sieg Hart uses element spells like lighting and poison.  He uses his most powerful spells on Ellie to make sure he kills her.  Ellie is dying little by little because of Sieg’s spells.

These are my reasons why Ellie might die in the end. I feel bad for Ellie because she could get killed by Aetherion or Sieg Hart. Unless Ellie’s friends save her, it might be the end for her.

Raymond's Run

Author's note : I wrote this piece to demonstrate my learning of Character development.


“I don’t got most work like most girls do.” This line is from Raymond’s Run written by Toni Cade Bambara. The girl who said this is Squeaky. Squeaky is short and has a squeaky voice. Although Squeaky may seem mean at the the beginning of the book, she does change at the end.

One thing that made her seem mean is when Squeaky said: “That’s right fatso. And another word out of anybody and I be their mother too. ” This shows Squeaky is mean and bossy.  Another thing she said was: ”I always win cause I’m the best” . Squeaky thinks she is better than anyone else when she’s not.  However, during the story, Squeaky starts to change.

One thing that signifies she is changing is when Squeaky said: “I sorta like her for the first time.” The girl Squeaky was talking about is Gretchen.  Of course, in the beginning they were both mean to each other. However, in the end they were nice to each other.  A last thing that made me think she changed is when Squeaky said this about Gretchen: “Cause she’s good no doubt about it. “ Squeaky changed when she saw her brother and deidced to be nice to the other girls.

Many things Squeaky said made her seem mean.  In the middle of the book,  Squeaky changes and she becomes nicer to Gretchen.  This change was gradual and  happened throughout the story. It made feel happy to see a character change for the better the way Squeaky did in this story.

Rave Master

Author's note: This piece is about  Conflict/Resolution in the story rave master. I wrote this to demonstrate my understanding of Conflict/Resolution



In the book Rave Master by Hiro Mashima, the main conflict is between Haru and Schneider and it’s over power. Schneider is an assassin sent by Shuda who is Schneider’s boss. Schneider wants to kill Haru, however, Haru fights back.

Haru eventually wins the battle. He does it by slashing Schneider many times at high speeds with a magical stone. The stone is called the Rave of Wisdom. The Rave of Wisdom also gave his sword special powers that allowed him to move at high speeds. Haru was a hero in this story and he won the battle and got more power.   Rachel Ward

The fawn

Author's note: This piece is about  Cause/Effect in the story The Fawn. I wrote this to demonstrate my understanding of Cause/Effect.


Every morning, I go to the top of the hill to go on the bus  However, one morning when I was getting on the bus, I saw a fawn.  It still had some of its spots so it was very young.  I wondered why a fawn was alone since I didn't see any other deer.   

When I came home from school I saw a dead deer near my house. It looked like it had been hit by a car going too fast.  I realized that the dead deer must be the fawn’s mother. I felt sad for the fawn, hoping that it is strong enough to survive the winter. This is why cars should go slow so the wildlife in Wisconsin don’t get killed.

The Week We Got Oscar

Author's note: this is a Personal Narrative about the time we got Oscar 

This is a story about when my family got our dog, Oscar, right after Christmas two years ago. Before we got Oscar, we were up north in Minocqua.  We were up north because we were celebrating Christmas and an early birthday for me.  My cousin, Asia, came home with us for Christmas break.

A couple of days after Christmas, Asia wanted a hamster. We went to the nearest pet store to get one and there was a puppy there named Coal because he was a pure bred black lab. We bought the hamster and asked to play with the puppy. Coal looked so sad in his cage and when we played with him, he perked up.

After a while, we had to leave the pet store so we drove home with the hamster. Vincent, Stevie, Asia and I begged mom and dad to get Coal.  A little while later, my mom drove off and came back with Coal!  We were all surprised and in disbelief that we a got a puppy.

My mom said we should change his name, so we did. We thought of names for him. Stevie and I wanted to name him Shadow, however, my dad said it was a girl’s name.  Therefore, we all voted on Oscar.

We changed it to Oscar and Asia named her hamster Oreo.  We found out that Oscar’s birthday is October 13 so he is about to turn three.

When Oscar got home from the pet store, he was not that sad little puppy anymore. He was really excited and happy to be with us. From the start, he was a trouble maker.  He kept getting in the garbage and stealing our toys and stuffed animals.  When he was too naughty, he had to go to his cage. He went in his cage a lot but we still love him. No matter what he does, he is fun to have around.
